Hampstead School has taken part in the Model United Nations for some years now. A number of students meet weekly to debate various issues, before preparing every March to go head to head with other schools in an MUN competition.
Earlier this morning we interviewed Mr Ackland, one of the teachers who runs MUN, about their work.
What are the benefits of the MUN?
“The MUN is a really enjoyable way of learning skills such as collaborative research, public speaking and critical thinking. These all relate to healthy curiosity.”
Why is the MUN not in our national curriculum? And would you like it to be?
“Core skills, such as History, are already in the curriculum.” Ackland says, “If more students participated they would find MUN fun.”
Before Mr Ackland joined the school in 2001, Mr O’Hagan drove MUN into Hampstead School. Since then MUN, an international debating club which stands for Model United Nations, has developed an important role in Hampstead School and has also joined the school’s debate club.
In the MUN you can debate about many things for example politics, climate change, democracy .etc.it is a very educational program to take part in as it involves teamwork, critical thinking, leadership .etc. one day all of the school across the world discus many topics.
