There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the fact that free school meals might be cancelled by the UK’s government recently. Theresa May’s conservative government have stated ‘a free school lunch for every child in the first three years of primary school... is not a sensible use of public money’. This has resulted in the public calling May “The meals snatcher”. The government has instead decided they should more of their money into the education system instead.
Plans were revealed for this by Nick Clegg at the Liberal party’s conference. The free lunch is now being swapped out for free breakfasts and more money into the education system because this is an apparently a better value for money. There have also been reports that budget used by primary schools is not enough.
A lot of head teachers have spoken out and said that taking a hot meal in the middle of the day is “mean-spirited and wrong-headed”. It has been stated that it will be hard for many children to go out with food till 3:30PM. A lot of primary schools have also come up with the idea of ‘the sweet-shop’ which has provided snacks for primary school students. There are also claims that before schools started providing school meals there were some children coming in with nothing. If the government botches free school meals we’ll revert back to this.
